About New York Neighbors for American Values:

New York Neighbors for American Values, a diverse group of over 130 organizations, works in New York City to promote and defend the constitutional rights and American values of religious freedom, diversity and equality. As New Yorkers, we are acutely aware that it’s been ten years since the attacks of September 11, 2001, in which nearly 3,000 people were tragically killed, the Twin Towers destroyed, and the resilience of the city we love sorely tested.

As we approach the tenth anniversary of 9/11, most New Yorkers are contemplating the meaning of an event that has profoundly changed our lives. Though the media tends to focus on stories that highlight the divisive side of this struggle for understanding, in actuality the responses to the anniversary are much like New York itself: passionate, representative of countless cultures and perspectives, and focused on building a better future.

Much attention has been paid to divisions among groups and political fault lines in the public debate. For our coalition, this anniversary is an occasion to recall not only the fear and confusion that lead to panicked security measures, but also that in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, our city experienced numerous expressions of unity, empathy and a renewed faith in each other as many of us joined together in solidarity and to help one another.
